On January 24th, 2026, Alex Pretti was executed by I.C.E. agents while peacefully helping a woman who had fallen.[1][2][3] According to video footage, witness accounts, and sworn testimony under oath, Mr. Pretti was recording the agents from the street as they attempted to enter a locked Donut shop. The agents walked onto the street to confront Mr. Pretti for filming, at which point an I.C.E. agent pushed a bystander to the ground and maced Mr. Pretti.[3][4][5] As Mr. Pretti moved to help the bystander up, he was surrounded and grappled by at least seven I.C.E. agents. One I.C.E. agent removed Mr. Pretti's firearm, which he was legally allowed to carry, from Mr. Pretti's holster. Another agent then drew his own firearm and shot Mr. Pretti in the back.[1][2][3][4][5] Mr. Pretti did not brandish his firearm or threaten I.C.E. agents at any point during the encounter.[6]
According to sworn testimony, rather than deliver emergency chest compressions to Mr. Pretti, I.C.E. agents chose to roll Mr. Pretti on his side to count the bullet holes in his back. A licensed physician who witnessed the shooting and asked to approach Mr. Pretti to assess him was repeatedly turned away before being allowed to approach Mr. Pretti. By this point, Mr. Pretti did not have a pulse. The licensed physician began performing chest compressions on Mr. Pretti until paramedics arived.[6][7]
I.C.E. quickly began a disinformation campaign in an attempt to smear Mr. Pretti's moral character. I.C.E. falsely claimed, among other things, that Mr. Pretti violently brandished his firearm[7][9], that Mr. Pretti intended to murder I.C.E agents[10], that I.C.E agents shot in self defense, and that medics "immediately" rendered aid to Mr. Pretti.[6][7][8] All of these statements are provably untrue and are refuted both by eyewitness accounts and video evidence.
Mr. Pretti was a registered nurse working in the intensive care unit of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. He is remembered by his coworkers at the Veterans Affairs as an exceptionally kind and caring soul, and was described by a neighbor and his family as a gentle person.[9][11] His compassion is remembered by the hundreds he helped in his studies, profession, and personal life.
